v. Thomas Dolby is member 00001 of the current incarnation of the Flat Earth Society.¹

¹ One model for a flat Earth, according to the society, describes the world as a disc with the North Pole at its centre and the continents spread out across the surface, much like the azimuthal equidistant projection depicted on the flag of the United Nations (where an olive-branch wreath takes the place of an encircling wall of ice). Although I had conceived of my circle drawing in the sand as representing a sphere, it could be considered an azimuthal equidistant projection of Tlön.

iv. Another Thomas, the musician Thomas Dolby, played keyboard on Belinda Carlisle’s 1988 hit Circle in the Sand. Dolby’s great-great-grandfather built the maltings in Snape, Suffolk where in 2011 Aldeburgh Music hosted an event celebrating the legacy of German writer Winfried Georg Sebald.
